In Just Five Days I Will No Longer Be Living in a Hallway

In just five days, I will embark on my international experience... First stop: Santiago, Chile. This means that I will no longer be couch surfing! Due to the awkward timing of these trips, during the past two weeks I have been alternating between two couches (thanks to amazing friends!) and keeping my clothes and other items in suitcases and two tight-fit containers.

Now that Santiago is right around the corner, I cannot wait to splash into the spanish language and culture. Oh Santiago, here I come and Hasta pronto (See you soon) !

What is this?

I am a nursing student at Simmons College. Within the past year I haven't felt completely happy with my degree, as if I haven't completely fulfilled my expectations. With this in mind, I met three amazing individuals who directed a new light into my eyes, public health and the study of anthropology.

With my growing interest in both public health and anthropology, I have decided to extend my collegiate graduation date and apply nursing to these topics. As a result, like puzzle pieces, I have researched and combined two study abroad programs (IES and SIT). Together these programs will introduce me to public health and allow me to apply the text material of public health to reality... thus incorporating anthropology. How does nursing interfere? Both the IES and SIT programs introduce learning in a classroom setting and through clinical experiences (Of hospitals and out-patient clinics). With these clinical experiences, I plan to use my prior knowledge of nursing in order to incorporate the concepts of public health and anthropology.

My Goal

With my prior knowledge of nursing/medicine and my further study of public health, I hope to investigate the relationship between healthcare and patient education. If patient education were to be improved, how would healthcare be impacted both financially and systematically? In which ways can health professionals best educate their patients so that patients have a clear understanding?

With questions like these in mind, I hope to invest myself in the study of patient education. With observations from these future experiences, I hope to create ways in which patient education can be improved, therefore impacting and improving healthcare from a general stand-point.

Four Strangers

Within the past year I have met 3 truly inspiring individuals; 2 graduate students from Boston University & a nomad of Northeastern University who has literally, traveled the world. When we met, almost as four strangers, we instantly shared a common goal, improve humanity. With the ideas and opinions surfaced from public health, we all have familiar interests that are viewed through a global perspective. Strangely, our thoughts when in combination, hold an all-too-familiar relationship: Infectious Disease, Patient Education, Anthropology, & Environmental International Development.

Through our united ideas, myself and these three strangers have both blossomed an unforgettable friendship & ignited a fire to inspire and push each other beyond once thought, unbelievable limits.

As a result, this blog will serve as reference to my 6-month international journey in order to both observe and inspire my own hypotheses towards improvement of healthcare.
